What sizes are the jars?
Runny and soft set honey come in two sizes - a ¾ lb jar (340 g) and a 1 lb jar (454 g). Comb honey comes in a box of at least 200 g.
What's the difference between runny and soft set?
Runny honey is clear and pours straight off the spoon. Soft set is set with very fine crystals, so it’s smooth and creamy and spreads on toast without dripping everywhere…
My runny honey has gone cloudy and set - is it alright?
It’s absolutely fine - all real honey sets in time, especially somewhere cool. To make it runny again, stand the jar in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water for half an hour or so, giving it a stir now and then. Best not to microwave it, as it can overheat in places.
How should I store it?
In the cupboard with the lid on, away from the cooker and out of the sun. There’s no need to keep honey in the fridge - room temperature is best.
Can babies have honey?
Not until they’re over a year old. The NHS advises not giving honey to babies under 12 months, as it can contain bacteria that cause infant botulism.
How do I look after a beeswax candle?
Trim the wick to about 6 mm before you light it, stand the candle on a heatproof plate or holder away from draughts, and never leave it burning unattended.
